MEETING WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF SUPERMARKETS, COLD STORES AND HOTELS

On 18 September, 2018 meetings with representatives of supermarkets, cold stores and hotels took place in «Hyatt place» hotel from 11:00 to 18:00. The meeting was aimed at presenting possible solutions and recommendations to decrease the impacts on the environment through RAC equipment used in the field, as well as trends in the international market of the particular field.

The meetings started with presenting the importance of the International Ozone Day, 16 September, the necessity of raising awareness in this regards, and also the thematic poster with the theme «Keep cool and carry on» designed by UN Environment.

Further, the attention of the participants was drawn to the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which was adopted on 15 October, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda; ratification is yet pending in Armenia. In this context the ongoing fulfillment of Armenia's international commitments and the importance of developing new legislative regulations were highlighted.

Besides, the Armenian versions of the posters, prepared by the GIZ and adopted by the National Ozone Unit, as well as the mobile application for safe refrigeration and air conditioning technologies were presented to the participants.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

MESSAGE ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY

FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE OZONE LAYER

16 September 2018

This has been a year of record-breaking heat around the world. It is also a pivotal time for climate action.

As we address this threat, we can draw inspiration from the Montreal Protocol, a shining example of how the world can come together for people and planet.

When science showed us that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other substances were tearing a hole in the ozone layer that protects all life on earth, the world responded with determination and foresight by banning them.  Thanks to this global commitment, the ozone layer is expected to return to its 1980 levels by mid-century.

However, this work is not yet done.

The landmark Kigali Amendment, which enters into force on 1 January 2019, sets its sights on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful climate-warming gases still used in cooling systems.

So far, 46 countries have ratified this new instrument; I call on all others to follow suit and show their commitment to a healthier planet. I expect countries to demonstrate significant progress in implementing the Kigali Amendment at the Climate Summit I am convening in September 2019.

For over three decades, the Montreal Protocol has done much more than shrink the ozone hole; it has shown us how environmental governance can respond to science, and how countries can come together to address a shared vulnerability.

I call for that same spirit of common cause and, especially, greater leadership as we strive to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change and mobilize the ambitious climate action we so urgently need at this time.

KIGALI AMENDMENT TO THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL AS A BRIDGE

On July 24, 2018 a working meeting entitled «Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol as a Bridge between the Ozone Layer Protection and Climate Change Mitigation Actions» was held at the UN Office. This initiative was led by the Ministry of Nature Protection, and supported by UNIDO under the «Enabling Activities for HFC Phase-down» Project and UNDP  too. The meeting was attended by the experts of the National Ozone Unit and Climate Change Center, and representatives of several departments of the ministry. Inspiring welcoming remarks were made by the First Deputy Minister Irina Ghaplanyan, referring to the commitments undertaken by both conventions emphasizing the importance of cooperation.

The agenda touched upon the  following topics:

  • The importance of energy efficiency in the HVAC sector.
  • Energy efficiency standards in Armenia.
  • Definition of energy efficiency requirements for cooling and air conditioning systems in public and community procurement.
  • Regular HFC data collection (institutional and organizational approaches).

The meeting was concluded by the interactive discussion resulting in  a draft roadmap for joint actions.

AHEAD OF SUMMER

The National Ozone Unit of the Ministry of Nature Protection of RA launched a series of initiatives dedicated to the ultraviolet radiation (UV), its potential dangers and means of protection. These initiatives are specific in terms of the target group - children aged 0 to 14 years, given their ultimate vulnerability to UV radiation.

In this regard under the public-private partnership framework a participatory decision was made to produce 20,000 copies of information labels which were handed over to local textile companies «Alex Textile», «Voske Kar» and «Satenkar» (Melante) LLCs to be further attached to summer collection of children’s garment produced by the companies.

Following the same logic 4000 labels were handed over to «Mankan» LLC, local producer of children’s soft toys.

Besides, 2500 copies of information bookmarks were published and distributed in the following way: 500 were provided to "Bookinist", "Noyan Tapan" and "Tumanyan Gratun" bookstores, 2000 copies have been provided to the children's libraries operating throughout the country with the support of the Ministry of Culture.

Within the framework of the same initiatives 1000 sun protecting bandanas were produced to be provided to orphanage children aged 0-6 years with the support of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

The information on the importance of the ozone layer, harmful effects of UV radiation and the need for protection contained in the labels and bookmarks has been jointly developed with the Ministry of Health. The initiatives were implemented with the support of the UNIDO.
