Armenia was the first regional country to be conferred upon “Ozone layer protection” award

Armenia was the first regional country to be conferred upon “Ozone layer protection” award

Joint 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (COP 11) and 29th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (MOP 29) took place in Montreal, on November 20-24.
These two international treaties are regarded as the most successful treaties of all time ratified by all 197 member states of the United Nations. The international community was at the fore front of efforts to phase-out more than 99 per cent of ozone-depleting substances. The meeting was remarkable as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. It is very symbolic that at the meeting it was officially declared that 21 Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer have unanimously ratified the Kigali Amendment paving the way for the reduction of powerful greenhouse gases- hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) that means the necessary threshold for entry into force of the Amendment.

The 4th day of the meeting was a ministerial roundtable dedicated to the achievements of the Montreal Protocol in the 30 years and forthcoming projects . The roundtable was attended by officials of state bodies of the relevant sphere, ministers or deputy ministers of Canada, Estonia, Guatemala, Maldives, Rwanda and the Republic of Armenia as well as Erik Solheim, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). During the roundtable RA Deputy Minister of Nature Protection Khachik Hakobyan presented key achievements promoting the Montreal Protocol fulfillment, the lessons we learnt from its success and the opportunities of applying them in providing solutions to other environmental issues, including workable methods to ensure sustainable development for ozone layer researches and the next steps for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
At the end of the first day of the meeting a solemn award-giving ceremony of the Ozone to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was held nominated in 8 categories. The National Ozone Unit of Armenia won the Ozone Protection Award in the nomination of Youth Creativity Award, becoming the only country to be presented with an award in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Regional Network.

In the course of the meeting Armenia’s National Ozone Unit Coordinator Liana Ghahramanyan was elected the Co-Chair of the eleventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention
At the meeting there was held an exhibition of the winners’ works of the international photo contest dedicated to climate change and protection of ozone layer organized by the UNDP in Uzbekistan. The photo of Lusine Torosyan, presenting the Republic of Armenia, was bestowed on the first place in the category "Ozone layer and I". From now on Lusine will work together Chief Officer of Multilateral Fund for the implementation of the Montreal Protocol Eduardo Ganem.
